2020 Scholarship Applications

Dear High School Presidents, Council Presidents, Guidance Counselors and Career Centers,

          Connecticut PTA and Nutmeg Statewide PTA are pleased to announce scholarship opportunities for all 2020 graduating seniors from a PTA/PTSA high school. As part of the criteria in applying for these scholarships, each high school is allowed to send in one application for each of the scholarships offered below:

Connecticut PTA Scholarship Award  - $1,000.  This award is in memory of Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher in space who was tragically killed in the Challenger in 1986.  To be considered for this award a student must be attending a four-year college or university to pursue a career in teaching.  The applicant must submit a one (1) page essay answering the question “The reason I am entering the teaching profession is. . .” (refer to application)

Carol P. Duggan Nutmeg PTA Scholarship Award - $1,500.   This award is presented to a high school student planning on attending a four-year college or university to pursue a career in service to children other than teaching.  The applicant must submit a one (1) page essay beginning with the sentence “I expect to be serving children ten years after college graduation by. . .” (refer to application)

Joseph G. Pearson Scholarship Award  - $1,000.  This award is presented in memory of a long time supporter of Nutmeg PTA, Joseph G. Pearson and is awarded to a high school student who has been identified with special needs and will be attending post secondary education or training.   The applicant is required to write a one-page essay with the first sentence beginning “I expect to overcome challenges in the future by. . .” (refer to application)

         

Attached find the appropriate applications for each of the scholarships named above.  We ask that you post these scholarship opportinities on your school’s web-site and/or distribute in accordance with your school’s policy.  Please make sure the applicant uses the appropriate  application for the scholarship he/she wishes to be considered for.  Please send one (1) application for each scholarship to Connecticut PTA, no later than February 28, 2020.  We ask that the PTA president, guidance counselor and/or career center director select one applicant for consideration for the Connecticut PTA Scholarship, Carol P. Duggan Nutmeg PTA Scholarship and Joseph G. Pearson Scholarship.  No emails or facsimiles will be accepted.

          In addition to the scholarships above, the Janet E. Petkus Scholarship Award  is given to the runner-up of the Carol P. Duggan Nutmeg PTA Scholarship in the amount of $500.

 

Consideration for each of the scholarship awards is given as follows:

  1. Essay - 5 points;

  2. School/Community Development - 3 points; 

  3. Letter of Recommendation – 2 points. 

Remember, only one application per school for each of the scholarships.  In addition, all applications must be signed by your PTA president.

 

          Connecticut PTA and Nutmeg Statewide PTA encourage all high school seniors to apply for these scholarships.  Funding for these scholarship awards is due in part to a portion of the proceeds from Connecticut PTA’s Life Achievement Award and Nutmeg Statewide PTA membership fees.  If you would like information about PTA Life Achievement Award or membership in Nutmeg Statewide PTA, please call our office at (203) 691-9585.
