The Connecticut PTA awards two $1,000 scholarships annually to students pursuing a career in education.

The Connecticut PTA Scholarship Award (in memory of Christa McAuliffe) is given to graduating seniors who expect to pursue a career in teaching.

NOTE: This scholarship is only available to students attending a school with a PTA unit that is in good standing with CT PTA. If your school is not a member of the Connecticut PTA, and you are interested in learning more about the PTA, please contact our office. Our Connecticut PTA representatives would be happy to educate the parents, teachers, and students of your school on this, and many of the other benefits of PTA membership.

Background:

In January,1986,the space shuttle Challenger exploded seconds after lift-off, taking the lives of seven astronauts including Christa McAuliffe. Ms. McAuliffe was an elementary school teacher from New Hampshire who was to have been the first teacher in space. She was scheduled to be a guest speaker at the National PTA convention that year to share her experiences in space with the National PTA delegates.

Immediately following the tragedy, National PTA President Ann Kahn asked each state PTA to pay tribute to Christa McAuliffe ’s memory in some way. In February1986, the Connecticut PT board of directors founded the Connecticut PTA Christa McAuliffe Scholarship Award, awarding an annual $250 scholarship. Through careful planning and proceeds received from Connecticut PTA Life Achievement Awards, the scholarships have been increased to two $1,000 awards each year.

Scholarship applications are sent to each Connecticut PTA/PTSA high school in December. Connecticut PTA presents two awards of $1,000 each to graduating seniors from PTA/PTSA high schools at the state PTA convention.

Students must be planning to attend a four-year college to pursue a career in teaching. The essay topic answers the question “What is your reason for entering the teaching profession?” The unit president and guidance counselor and/or principal are asked to select one applicant for each category from among the school’s applicants. Only one application per school is to be received by the state PTA Office no later than close of business, March 1. If more than one application per category is received, the first one received will be considered. No facsimiles or e-mails will be accepted.
