Phoebe Apperson Hearst-National PTA Excellence in Education Partnership Award

Goal of the Award

To recognize PTA units whose collaborative efforts with parents, families, educators, and community members promote parent/family involvement with ongoing programs that encourage student success.

Who Should Apply?

A local PTA in good standing with the state PTA and National PTA. Local PTAs may submit applications to their state PTA, and the state PTA may submit one application for national consideration.

What the Award Provides

The national winner will...

Receive two expense-paid trips, one for the PTA president or designee and one for a representative of the collaborative group, to the National PTA Convention

bullet

Participate in convention activities as requested

bullet

Be featured in National PTA publications

bullet

Receive $2,000 for a PTA program promoting parent involvement

There will be four honorable mention recipients and they will receive $500 each. The national winner and four honorable mentions will each receive a commemorative award. All applicants for the award will receive a certificate of participation.

Deadline

bulletAll entries must be received in the Connecticut PTA office by March 1.

Selection Criteria

Prepare a narrative for each of the following selection criteria:

Describe your program. Who is the collaborative group? Which National PTA Standards for Parent/Family Involvement Programs were used and how? (See below.) How does the program fulfill the National PTA Objects or mission as reflected in the work of our founders, Phoebe Apperson Hearst and Alice McLellan Birney? (40 points)

bullet

How and why was the program selected? How have you sustained the program? How did you evaluate your program? What are your next collaborative steps? How are you going to use the award to sustain the program? (50 points)

Why should you receive this award? (10 points)

National PTA Standards for Parent/Family Involvement Programs

Communicating. Communication between home and school is regular, two-way, and meaningful.

Parenting. Parenting skills are promoted and supported.

Student Learning. Parents play an integral role in assisting student learning.

Volunteering. Parents are welcome in the school, and their support and assistance are sought.

School Decision Making and Advocacy. Parents are full partners in the decisions that affect children and families.

Collaborating with Community. Community resources are used to strengthen schools, families, and student learning.
