National PTA President's Letter Family Matters - Remembering What’s Most Important During the HolidaysPTA members are selfless individuals. We give countless hours of our time, knowing that our efforts will make the world a little bit better for everyone. Sometimes, though, our personal well-being may suffer because of the commitments we make to the larger community. That’s why I urge all of you during this holiday season to look toward the people who give us strength and inspiration throughout the year—our families. As someone dedicated to improving the lives of children in your community and around the nation, you know the value of a strong, supportive family life. Still, at this busy time of year, we all need to be reminded to slow down, recharge, relax, and spend time with the ones who mean the most to us. Families feed our souls. They encourage and motivate us; they share our delight during the best times and push us forward during the hard times. While it may not always be apparent to you, your PTA involvement sends a clear message to your family about the importance of civic engagement. Just as you demonstrate to your children the value of being a responsible citizen, you must also show them the importance of taking care of yourself and nurturing the relationships that you hold closest to your heart. During this time of thanksgiving, thank your children, your parents, your spouse, and your aunts and uncles for everything that they bring to your life. Tell them why they are special to you—and then show them how special they are. Gifts and elaborate meals are nice, but even more important are hugs, kisses, and just spending time with them. As PTA members, we want the best for every family. The realization of that goal begins in each of our homes as we strengthen our bonds with the people who matter most. Wishing you a happy and safe holiday season!
