TRICK-OR-TREATERS CAN COLLECT EYEGLASSES FOR THE GIFT OF SIGHT

"My son got very excited about Sight Night," said Sidney Rabin, a parent from Demarest, N.J. "It was a great opportunity for him to see that he can make a difference in other people’s lives. He collected over a dozen pairs of glasses, and felt great about his success. I’m sure he’ll want to participate again next year.”

Sight Night Web SiteHalloween night is an occasion to give as well as receive for thousands of trick-or-treaters in the U.S. and Canada who collect used eyeglasses along with their sweets each year.

These little volunteers are participating in SIGHT NIGHT®, an effort that has provided more than a half million pairs of eyeglasses for people in need around the world by LensCrafters and Lions Clubs International as part of Give the Gift of Sight.

Adults get involved, too - as organizers of SIGHT NIGHT events, as escorts of the little trick-or-treaters, or even as collectors themselves. The goal: to collect used eyeglasses for thousands of people in developing countries who desperately need them. Since SIGHT NIGHT was launched by LensCrafters and Lions Clubs International in 1999, almost 60,000 volunteers have collected used eyeglasses that were refurbished and provided to people in 25 developing countries such as Laos, Malaysia, Peru and Mexico.

All trick-or-treaters are welcome to participate each year in Sight Night, either by themselves or with a group of friends, family or classmates who want to help. Sight Night materials are available through the Web site, www.sightnight.org. and can be ordered as early as late August. All glasses collected can be dropped off at any LensCrafters or Lions club.

And if your old eyeglasses weren’t collected on Halloween, you can drop them off at your nearest LensCrafters store or local Lions Club all year long.

SIGHT NIGHT volunteers include hundreds of school kids, scouts, church groups, community organizations and businesses. A simple request to the SIGHT NIGHT Web site or hotline will provide free information and a collection kit to help organize trick-or-treaters to collect eyeglasses. Volunteers can go door-to-door collecting glasses or organize events such as parties or costume parades which serve as collection points for the eyeglasses. Once the glasses are gathered, volunteers return them to LensCrafters and Lions club locations where they are recycled and hand-delivered to people in developing countries.

Each year, LensCrafters associates, doctors and Lions club members travel on missions to international destinations performing eye exams and delivering recycled glasses to as many as 20,000 people during a single two-week mission. In many of these countries, there may only be a few eye doctors, and glasses may cost up to one month’s wages.

Give the Gift of Sight is a family of charitable vision care programs sponsored by LensCrafters and LensCrafters Foundation in partnership with Lions Clubs International and other local charities. Since 1988, volunteers have helped more than 3 million people see more clearly - often for the first time in their lives – through programs in the United States, Canada and developing countries.
