ANNOUNCEMENT
July 12, 2003

Housatonic Community PTA held an informational meeting on the topic of
NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND

Noting that the reauthorization of this law will touch the lives of all members of our community; students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members at large, Housatonic Community PTA recently held an informational meeting on this topic.

The two major purposes of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) are to raise student achievement across the board and to eliminate the achievement gap between students from different backgrounds. The law requires states and school districts to deal forcefully with schools that are not improving achievement and to ensure that all students are taught by highly qualified teachers. There exists within this law a strong parent involvement component.

L-R: Mr. Craig Toensing, State Board of Education Chairman, Theresa Duncan, Dr. Theodore Sergi, Connecticut Commissioner of Education, Donna McGuire

Dr. Theodore Sergi, Commissioner of Education and Mr. Craig Toensing, Chairman of the State Board of Education presented information on this timely topic during the PTA meeting at Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

During the PTA meeting, Donna McGuire, State PTA President presented retiring Commissioner of Education, Dr. Theodore Sergi with Connecticut’s PTA Honorary Life Membership.
