September 11 Quilt ProjectIn the wake of the events on September 11, Americans have unified like never before, looking for ways they can help. The September 11 Quilt Project is an opportunity for people to contribute a lasting and personal piece of themselves to the effort, as a testament to America's determination to rebuild, and to never forget. The September 11 Quilt Project brings together two enduring symbols of American life: our flag, and the rich tradition of quilting. Since the tragedy of the terrorist attacks, the virtue of the American flag has deepened, reflecting the unprecedented spirit of renewal seen daily in the efforts of every single American. It is a symbol of our determination to rebuild and strengthen this country-piece-by-piece. And so, as the country works to rebuild, we will honor her with a different kind of flag, one made up-piece-by-piece-of the personal expressions of individuals through the joining together of hearts and hands in a lasting celebration of the beauty, spirit and foundation of America. How Does it Work? The September 11 Quilt Project will collect individual patches, or "panels", from all over the country and the world, from anyone who would like to contribute. (No sewing or quilting skills are involved in making a panel.) These panels will be sewn together in the shape and design of the American flag, to be displayed in New York City, Washington, DC, Pittsburgh, and other cities around the world. Our goal is to have the first flag completed by July 4, 2002, when it will be sent to the sites of the tragedy to be displayed as part of the celebration.
