GRANT ALERT FROM THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS
Applications and guidelines are available for $2000
and $3000 grants to hold Conversations
About Education. Any group of sponsors may apply for a grant-educational,
community, business, civic, etc. Deadline is July 15.
Over 50 Connecticut cities and towns have already participated in successful
Conversations About Education in the last four years. The Conversations are
funded by the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund and managed by the League
of Women Voters Education Fund Inc. of Connecticut. The current topic list
includes:
Academic Standards and Expectations
Child Care
Helping All Children Succeed in a Diverse Society
Parental Involvement
Purposes of Education
The Question of School Choice
School Funding
School Safety
Teaching Methods
Teacher Quality
| "Best thing this town has ever
done," recently said a Plainfield parent, which sums up the general
feeling about these Conversations. |
Your local planning committee makes all decisions, choosing one of these
topics, the date and site. We provide funding. You invite about 100 people to
come together to discuss the chosen single topic. Each small group is a diverse
mix of parents, students, teachers, non-educators, senior citizens,
businesspeople, home-schoolers, blue-collar workers, racial and ethnic
minorities and the clergy. We encourage the participation of new faces to hear
new voices on the subject of education in your community. A local moderator whom
we train leads each small group. A recorder captures everything so the
information can be used for further action.
The deadline for the one-page applications is July 15. To obtain
guidelines and applications contact the League of Women Voters office in Hamden
at 203-288-7996. If you have any questions contact
the League office.
