A Message from Our President:

I'm saddened to my core and words cannot begin to describe the tragedy that has been unfolding before us in one of very own neighborhood elementary schools. Newtown is close to me personally. I have friends who live there and I couldn't imagine anything like this happening in such a close knit community, let alone Sandy Hook Elementary School.

As you can imagine, our statewide parent community is concerned and saddened. National PTA has issued a Press Release and a link to information on the National PTA website that I hope will be helpful in offering tips and advice in counseling our children who may be impacted by the news of today's shooting (see below). We have also found the National Association of School Psychologists www.nasponline.org  to be useful for further related information.

This is a day of unspeakable tragedy in which our hearts are grieving over the terrible and senseless loss of children and adults lost at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the Sandy Hook community. Please give your kids an extra hug tonight.

Sincerely,
Jim Accomando

National PTA Statement on Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting

ALEXANDRIA, VA. (December 14, 2012)—The following statement can be attributed to National PTA® President Betsy Landers:

National PTA feels enormous sympathy for the students, families and communities affected by the horrendous tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., today.  Our country has experienced far too many of these tragedies, and we all share in the sense of loss and hurt.

School and child safety is one of PTA’s core tenets as it is crucial to effective learning. A traumatic event like that of this morning affects the entire community, especially the families and friends of the victims. This can be an emotional time, and it’s important for people affected by this tragedy to connect with and support each other.

National PTA has many resources to assist students, families, schools and PTAs in coping with school violence. The resources are downloadable at PTA.org/SchoolViolence.

National PTA believes the protection of children in all school settings is a fundamental right and has made this the utmost priority for our work and advocacy.
